What Causes a Flat Battery

Leaving the vehicle unused for two or more weeks causes the battery to discharge to the point where the starter motor cannot turn the engine over. Modern vehicles with keyless entry, alarms, and connected services draw small amounts of current continuously even when parked, which drains a borderline battery within days.

Interior lights, boot lights, and dashboard screens left on are also common causes. If your battery goes flat repeatedly after being jump started, the battery itself needs replacing rather than just a recharge.

Our Jump Start Process

When we arrive, we connect our jump pack to your battery and attempt to start the vehicle. In most cases this takes a few minutes. Once the engine is running, we advise you to drive for at least 20 to 30 minutes at motorway or dual carriageway speed to let the alternator recharge the battery fully. Short town driving does not fully recharge a depleted battery.

We also test your battery voltage and charging system with diagnostic equipment. This tells us whether the battery is likely to hold charge again, or whether it has degraded and will go flat again within days or weeks.

Battery Replacement at the Roadside

We carry a range of AGM, EFB, and standard lead-acid batteries for common vehicle makes and models. AGM and EFB batteries are required for vehicles with stop-start systems. Fitting a standard lead-acid battery in place of an AGM battery causes charging system faults and shortens battery life significantly. We match the correct battery specification to your vehicle.

Battery coding is required on some vehicles. BMW, Mercedes, Audi, and Volkswagen Group cars typically need the new battery registered with the vehicle's ECU so that the charging system adapts correctly. We carry diagnostic equipment for battery coding where required.
