Motorcycle recovery needs a different approach to car recovery. Bikes are lighter but more vulnerable to damage during loading and transport. The wrong securing method damages forks, fairings, and alloy wheels. MW Recovery uses dedicated motorcycle loading equipment on all bike callouts across Greater Manchester.

We recover all motorcycle types including sports bikes, naked bikes, cruisers, adventure bikes, classic motorcycles, and mopeds. Our flatbed trucks carry wheel chocks and soft-loop tie-down straps specifically for motorcycle recovery. We do not use hard clamps that contact alloy wheels or bodywork.

How We Load and Secure Motorcycles

The bike is walked up the loading ramp or lifted onto the flatbed using a suitable point. We fit a front wheel chock to hold the wheel straight and prevent forward movement. Soft-loop straps go around the handlebars and footpeg area. We never use straps that contact painted bodywork, fairings, or exhaust systems without protection in place.

The bike travels upright on the flatbed, not on its side. On arrival at the destination, we walk it back down the ramp carefully. The whole process is done slowly and methodically. A recovered motorcycle should arrive in exactly the same condition as when we loaded it.

Why Motorcycles Break Down

• Flat battery: motorcycles left unused for a few weeks discharge quickly, especially in winter. We carry motorcycle-rated jump packs and 12V batteries for common bike makes.
• Tyre puncture or blowout: a rear tyre blowout on a motorcycle is a handling emergency. Once the bike is stopped safely, call us. We do not advise riding on a punctured tyre. We carry some motorcycle tyre sizes but most bikes need a specialist fitter.
• Engine seizure: most common in older bikes or those run low on oil. The engine stops suddenly and will not turn over. This is a workshop repair. The bike goes on the flatbed.
• Fuel problems: bikes have small tanks. Running dry on a main road is a common callout. We carry a small fuel can for petrol bikes. If the bike has run dry, a few litres gets you to the nearest petrol station.
• Chain issues: a snapped chain or derailed chain stops the bike dead and can cause rear wheel lock-up. This is a roadside assessment. Minor chain issues can sometimes be fixed at the roadside. Snapped chains need a workshop.
• Accident damage: we recover motorcycles after incidents where the bike is not rideable. We photograph the bike before loading for insurance purposes.

Motorcycle Accident Recovery

After a motorcycle accident, the rider comes first. Once you are safe and medical help has been arranged if needed, call us for the bike. We attend accident scenes involving motorcycles and recover bikes from all positions including on their side, against barriers, or in off-road positions. We photograph the bike and damage before loading, which supports your insurance or personal injury claim.

Saddleworth and Pennine Routes

The Saddleworth moors and the Pennine routes east of Manchester are popular with bikers and a regular area for our motorcycle recovery callouts. The A635, the A669, and the roads through Greenfield, Uppermill, Delph, and Diggle are narrow in places and exposed. We know these roads and can reach Saddleworth locations from our Salford base in around 40 to 55 minutes.
