Smart Motorway Recovery

Sections of the M60, M62, and M56 run as smart motorways with variable speed limits and no permanent hard shoulder. If you break down in an active travel lane on a smart motorway, stay in your vehicle with your seatbelt fastened. Switch on your hazard lights. Call 07553 322281 straight away. National Highways will pick up the stationary vehicle on cameras and put up warning signs and reduced speed limits for approaching traffic.

Don't try to leave the vehicle unless it is on fire or you face immediate danger. Our drivers are trained in smart motorway procedures and liaise with Highways England before approaching live lane breakdowns.

What to Do on the Motorway

If something feels wrong with your vehicle, pull onto the hard shoulder at the first chance. Don't keep driving if your engine warning light is on and the vehicle feels different. The risk of a full breakdown in a live lane gets higher the longer you push a struggling vehicle.

Once on the hard shoulder: switch on hazard lights, turn the steering wheel left so that if the vehicle rolls it goes away from the carriageway, exit from the left side only, and walk up the embankment or to the nearest emergency refuge. Keep children and pets out of the vehicle. Call us from the embankment or refuge and don't stand near the vehicle on the hard shoulder.

Our Motorway Recovery Equipment

Our flatbed tow trucks handle all motorway breakdowns. We don't tow on the motorway with a rigid bar. All vehicles are loaded onto the flatbed and secured before we move. Our trucks carry traffic cones, amber flashing beacons, and reflective equipment to protect the recovery area while we load your vehicle.

For vehicles with faults that can be sorted on site (fuel problems, minor electrical faults, flat batteries) we aim to fix and return the vehicle to the driver rather than recovering it, which saves time and money. If a tow is needed, we exit at the next junction and take your vehicle to your chosen destination.

Response Times on Manchester Motorways

From our Salford base, we typically reach M60 and M62 incidents within 30 to 45 minutes. M56 and M61 call outs are usually 35 to 50 minutes.
