Broken down car? Don't panic. Our step-by-step guide covers exactly what to do when your car breaks down on the road, from roadside safety to calling for help.

A broken down car is stressful at the best of times. Whether you are stuck on a busy dual carriageway or a quiet country lane, knowing exactly what to do can protect you, your passengers, and other road users. This guide walks you through every step, from the moment something goes wrong to the moment help arrives.

Step 1: Stay Calm and Pull Over Safely

The moment you notice something is wrong, whether it is a warning light, a strange noise, a flat tyre, or a loss of power, your first priority is to get off the road safely. Signal early and pull over to the left as far as possible. If you are on a motorway, aim for the hard shoulder or an emergency refuge area. On a dual carriageway, a lay-by is ideal. Avoid stopping on a bend or the brow of a hill where your vehicle will be hard to see.

If your car loses power suddenly and you cannot reach the hard shoulder, try to coast as far left as possible and switch on your hazard lights immediately.

Step 2: Make Your Vehicle Visible

Once stopped, switch on your hazard warning lights straight away. If it is dark or visibility is poor, leave your sidelights on too. If you have a warning triangle, place it at least 45 metres behind your vehicle on the same side of the road. Do not use a warning triangle on a motorway as it puts you at risk walking in live traffic.

A hi-vis vest or jacket is worth keeping in your boot at all times. Put it on before you get out of the car so you are visible to passing drivers from the moment your door opens.

Step 3: Get Everyone to Safety

Get yourself and any passengers out of the vehicle through the passenger side door, away from passing traffic. Move well behind the barrier on a motorway or as far from the road edge as possible on other roads. Keep pets in the vehicle unless there is an immediate risk to their safety.

Never stand in front of or behind your vehicle. If a driver fails to see your car and hits it, those are the most dangerous positions to be in. Stay behind a crash barrier or on a grass verge if one is available.

Step 4: Assess the Problem Without Taking Risks

Once everyone is safe, take a quick look at the obvious causes. A flat tyre is often easy to spot. A temperature warning light could mean coolant loss. A red battery light might indicate a failed alternator. If you are confident changing a tyre and it is safe to do so, this is the one roadside repair most drivers can manage. For anything else, wait for professional help rather than working under the bonnet in a dangerous location.

If your car has broken down on a motorway, motorway recovery is the safest option. Attempting repairs in a live motorway environment is extremely dangerous.

Step 5: Make the Roadside Assistance Call

This is where having a reliable breakdown number saved in your phone makes a real difference. When you call for breakdown recovery near you, be ready to give your exact location, the make and model of your vehicle, and a brief description of the problem. Use motorway marker posts to pinpoint your location, these blue posts are spaced every 100 metres and display your exact position.

MW Recovery operates 24 hours a day across Greater Manchester and surrounding areas. You can reach us any time for fast car breakdown roadside assistance. Our team covers the M60, the M62, and all major A-roads in the region.

Step 6: Wait Safely Until Help Arrives

Once you have made the call, stay well away from the vehicle and the road. Keep your phone charged and in hand. If the weather is bad, it is generally safer to stay in the vehicle with your seatbelt on, especially on a motorway, rather than standing outside in the dark or rain.

If at any point you feel threatened or in immediate danger, call 999. The police can arrange traffic management and ensure your safety while you wait for recovery.

What Not To Do When Your Car Breaks Down

  • Do not attempt to push your vehicle on a motorway or dual carriageway
  • Do not accept lifts from strangers unless you have no other option
  • Do not leave the vehicle without switching on hazard lights
  • Do not stand in the road to flag down help
  • Do not leave children or pets alone in the vehicle on a hot day
  • Do not try complex repairs at the roadside without training

Essential Items to Keep in Your Boot

Being prepared makes a breakdown far less stressful. Consider keeping the following in your car at all times:

  • Hi-vis vest or jacket
  • Warning triangle (for non-motorway use)
  • Torch with spare batteries
  • Jump leads or a portable jump starter pack
  • Tyre inflation kit or spare tyre
  • Phone charger or power bank
  • Basic first aid kit
  • Warm blanket and bottled water

If your battery has failed, our jump start and battery service can get you moving quickly without the need for a full recovery.
